Lithuania, almost 15 years after it´s independence of Russia and in the first year of it´s membership in the European Union. The larger cities mostly meet western standards, especially the young generation is on a spending spree and makes up it´s need for consumption in huge shopping malls, which are open til late night. In some rural areas on the other hand people are still living without electricity and running water. Alcoholism is a common problem. Vaida, adviser in the commitee of foreign affairs, describes the adjustment to capitalism and free-market economy like that: " You see the beautiful lake but you can´t see how deep it is and you cannot swim."
